Happy EDC Week, everyone! By the time you are reading this, I am making my way “under the electric sky” to the Electric Daisy Carnival and can’t wait to write all about my Vegas trip when I come back home to NYC. In the meantime, I wanted to give a list of my 10 most anticipated sets Im SUPER EXCITED to see at EDC! In true P.L.U.R1 fashion, I could not bring myself to rank them, so these also are in no particular order. If you want to catch some of the sets I will get to see live, check out Insomniac’s YouTube page, as they will have livestreams! Fair warning….this festival is from dusk until dawn, so be prepared to stay up a little late if you want to watch along (no matter what time zone you are in).
Note: I also want to note that I already know that I wont make some of these sets due to conflicting sets, but I am going to act optimistic here.
Nico Moreno B2B Ihatemodels
Techno has made a renaissance in recent years and it is no thanks to these icons. French DJ Ihatemodels has had a breakout year with his mysterious persona and standout hard hitting beats, especially at his more recent Ultra Miami set (see below). While he may be performing multiple times on the EDC stage, I think his B2B or Back to Back with fellow Frenchmen Nico Moreno stands on top as a set that I absolutely cannot miss. Moreno also stands out for his own work, even doing a killer back to back with techno queen Sara Landry (read more about her NYC show controversy here). These two are part of the Time warp stage takeover on Sunday, and as someone who has been to an iteration of their festivals locally in NYC in recent years, this stage takeover might steal the entire show.
Afrojack
God, I can already feel that this set is going to speak to the 13-year-old in me who learned what EDC was and had big dreams of one day attending. Dutch DJ (and David Guetta’s prodigy) Afrojack was one of my first re-introductions back into the world of EDM with hits like Take Over Control and Give Me Everything. There were times in my life I remember subjecting my family to his music at 5am while getting ready for school2. Seeing him on the EDC lineup definitely had me excited with nostalgia. I personally have never had the chance to see him live before and figure that this may be one of those only chances I will get. Watching his recent set from Ultra Music Festival (see below), I admire his feel-good 2010’s style of house music. An era reminiscent of tumblr, young-adult film adaptations, and Ipod Touches, it almost feels like a full circle moment as I achieve my dream of being under the electric sky.
Lavern
An artist that I recall discovering on tik tok a couple of years ago, Dutch DJ Lavern brings a transcendent/borderline spiritual vibe to his style of house music. While many people on my list can be considered “intense” (even for EDM standards), this artist is what I would consider a nice mental break from all of that bass. His most recent set at Academy Los Angeles (see below) proves that groove even more. Performing twice on the EDC stage, his set times on Friday (aka Day 1) tell me that he intends to set the right vibe for the entire weekend and pay homage to the house head origins of the Electric Daisy Carnival. Out of his two sets, I think the smaller/more intimate Forest House stage may be an even better experience as there will potentially be more art installations to build upon the experience.
Deorro & Friends
As a Latina, I may or may not be legally obligated to see this incredible Mexican-American Artist (and his friends of course). A former quinceanera DJ (yes, I am jealous he didnt play at mine), his music blends both of my worlds together. Similar to Afrojack, he is one of those artists that reintroduced me to EDM mixing house music and various other Latin genres like merengue and cumbia. Paving the way for many Latin EDM artists, Deorro has been revolutionary in the EDM world and with EDC announcing their newest festival location in Medellin, Colombia, the Latino Gang has never felt stronger. I am curious as to who the “friends” are on this lineup…maybe we will see a Steve Aoki3 in our midst? Or maybe even more Latin Superstars?
Maddix
Another Techno giant, Holland’s own Maddix has easily had one of my favorite techno albums of the year with Global Awakening. Taking a trip back into the late 90s, his work brings nostalgia to a time where the future was perceived to be colorful and technologically innovative while the new millennia was imminent. Maddix has been high on my must-see list for some time and seeing him on the lineup made me light up. His Ultra Miami set (see below) was incredible and could only imagine who crazy his EDC set is going to be. Maybe after this, I will finally plan my epic raver-focused Euro Trip, touring around the UK, Germany, The Netherlands and beyond.
Crankdat B2B Tape B
This set is going to feel personal for me. It was a game-time decision last year at Lost Lands; Subtronic’s Sunset Set vs Tape B. & Crankdat, SEPARATELY. Between everyone in my rave fam, it was a really tough decision because to us, they all stand near equal to one another in terms of talent. Ultimately, we chose what turned out to be an EPIC Sunset Set, and was easily ranked in my top 3 for Lost Lands sets. Yet, I still felt guilty about missing Crankdat. He has easily been one of my favorite American dubstep artists in recent years, with his hard hitting drops and funny interludes. After seeing his Lost Lands set (see below) that I missed, I felt even more guilty. With this B2B on the lineup, it not only feels like I’m getting a second chance, but that I am also having a full circle moment.
Dimension
Once again, it is time for Baddy Baddy, DnB O’Clock ! Dubbed one of the Drum n Bass Allstars, the UK’s Dimension is a force to be reckoned with. Collaborating with some of the biggest artists in the DnB world, its a wonder that EDC has only a select few artists within this genre including the legendary Chase & Status. Drum n Bass has easily been one of my favorite sub-genres in recent years and I cannot wait to do “a proper skank”, tú sabes? I can imagine him now, cigarette in mouth, ready to throw down a fun set that will most certainly get your blood pumping. By now you may have noticed that I have included a lot of artists’ Ultra Miami sets (at least the ones that have played there this year). Why is that you ask? Well, sometimes a set from a year or two ago is not necessarily reflective of where an artist is at currently in their creative process. :)
Samplifire
Another Dubstep giant, French DJ Samplifire has had a great last few years, remixing classic Britney Spears tracks and collaborating with some of the biggest names in dubstep (including the next ladies on our list). While I was only able to catch the tail end of his Lost Lands set, I am so excited to see him again at the Legendary BassPod stage. Blending different bass genres like dubstep, hip hop, pop and riddim, I fully expect this set to get a little wonky, reminiscent of those gremlin hours (aka the after 3am crowd). Many of the bass artists listed here will be playing at BassPod, and while I don’t want to go in biased, I expect it to be my favorite stage of the festival; no thanks to artists like him.
Jessica Audiffred B2B Layz
Now this…..THIS is the set that I never thought I would be able to see. Repping both Mexico and the United States respectively, dubstep queens Jessica Audiffred (read more about her own show here) and Layz have had an epic B2B before (see below). And with them back together on the lineup, their Lost Lands set is just as good as I remember it to be. This was the set that arguably convinced me to go to that festival in the first place (and how I was able to convince my friend “Nemasis” to come with me). Reuniting on a festival stage after 2 years, I full expect for there to be some SERIOUS head-banging and even more SERIOUS moshpits at the BassPod stage. Do not underestimate these badass women; they easily throw down harder than the guys.
Mike Posner
I have to admit…when I saw this mans name on the lineup, I was a bit confused. Mike Posner? The guy who made “Cooler than me”? BUT WAIT….isn’t he kind of iconic as the vocalist for the certified classic, “I took a pill in Ibizia”?! He is the only one on this list that does not have a live set to reference from in terms of performance. This leaves me with a lot of questions: How did he get a slot at EDC? Does he even DJ/did he always want to DJ? Is this his way of honoring the late-great EDC Veteran Avicii (RIP)? Regardless…I am definitely intrigued as to what he is going to bring to the EDC stage. Him being on the lineup reminds me of DJ Snake at Lost Lands last year. Not normally known for being a Bass artist, he Shocked everyone with a whole new persona named The Outlaw and an incredible sick dubstep set (that I unfortunately missed). Who knows? Maybe Posner will pull something suprising out of his bag of tricks.
While I am excited to see all of these artists, what I am most excited for is the amount of solo-exploring I am about to do otherwise known in the community as Sidequests. From Dunkin Donut’s houses, to Drag Race stages, I have been seeing non-stop content from EDC veterans encouraging everyone to explore the grounds as they are prime for sidequesters (like myself). A practice common in the rave community, Side-questing or solo-adventuring around a festival is not something I would normally do at non-EDM events. With EDC being my 3rd EDM festival and 6th music festival overall, I am STOKED to take myself on an adventure.
For anyone going to EDC, I will see you all under the Electric Sky!
